MASK. This stone (black chlorite) replica of a traditional "chiefs-style" Dzunuk'wa mask has painted red trim. The mask represents a mythic female figure of the Kwakaka'wakw peoples whose homeland encompassed northeast Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia across the Queen Charlotte Straight.
A chief wore a life-sized version of this mask at this potlatch while an orator described his accomplishments. A larger-than-life version was used to impress children to mind their parents so the giant wouldn't put them in her basket and carry them away.
